History of Diseases
Humans have been plagued (pun intended) by diseases for as long as humans have existed. During around 9000 BC, people evolved from hunter-gatherer lifestyle to a sedentary one, and diseases formed at a higher rate in stationary civilizations, especially urban areas with overcrowded, unsanitary conditions. Food was often prepared next to open sewers and rats, cockroaches and rotting corpses polluted drinking water. Humans and animals lived in close proximity, resulting in high chances of Zoo-tonic diseases. Once trade started, possibilities for widespread disease was heightened.
Smallpox
Smallpox was a serious infectious disease caused by the Variola major and Variola minor viruses. It was contagious and spread from one person to another via prolonged face-to-face contact between people. Those with Smallpox had a fever and a distinctive, progressive skin rash that looked like a series of bumps or swellings across the body.
